TNC Working Forests
In the fall of 2011, I was asked to photograph and create a video for The Nature Conservancy on their efforts to protect and improve the health of the forests in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It was a dream assignment for me as I spent 2 trips hiking through the hardwood forests, canoeing down the famed Two Hearted River and even soaring above it all in a tiny prop plane. I followed followed along with timber cruisers as they cataloged and marked the forest and laid the groundwork for a sustainable relationship between industry and conservation. The goal is to create a sustainable practice of selectively harvesting trees in order to promote a healthier and more diverse forest as well as provide much needed jobs in a remote part of the state.
