Viswakarma Blues
In early 2012 I spent 3 weeks traveling through parts of India. I was fascinated by the primitive construction I saw throughout the countryside and the countless small workshops of the cities through which I passed. I saw men hand-sawing sheet metal and using it to assemble the brightly-painted cargo trucks endlessly rolling down India's roads. I encountered quarries that stretched to the horizon where workers cut and broke stone by hand. I watched families working all day, hand-forming bricks under a desert sun. Heavy machinery and automation were absent and the effort and exhaustion of the workers I met was worn on their faces and their clothes. Viswakarma is the Hindu god of craftsmen, and these photos are his blues.
